HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has teamed up with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Job Corps program to provide students with a direct pathway into shipbuilding careers. A recent two-day recruiting event hosted by the partnership attracted over 120 students from 20 states. By the end of the event, 68 students had secured job offers for critical trades such as welding, electrical work, and machining.
Connecting Students with Job Opportunities
On Dec. 6, Ingalls Shipbuilding representatives visited the Mississippi Job Corps Center in Crystal Springs for interviews with the students. Successful candidates were invited to the Ingalls shipyard for onboarding and a tour. This initiative addresses the growing demand for skilled labor in the shipbuilding sector.
A Powerful Workforce Partnership
“This partnership with Job Corps is integral to our workforce strategy,” said Susan Jacobs, Ingalls Shipbuilding’s Vice President of Human Resources. “Job Corps students are joining us with the skills needed to support the mission of our nation’s military.”
Job Corps, with its network of over 120 centers nationwide, partners with employers to help students build careers in fields such as advanced manufacturing, construction, and transportation. Job Corps National Director John E. Hall emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting it allows students to connect with one of the nation’s top shipbuilding contractors.
Strengthening America’s Workforce
The recruiting event is a testament to how collaboration between employers and workforce development programs can create lasting opportunities. It reinforces HII’s commitment to meeting the nation’s shipbuilding needs and investing in the future of American workers.
