HR has evolved from a compliance-driven function to a strategic powerhouse. But can leaders be too strategic? Rocki Howard, Textio’s Chief People and Equity Officer, thinks so.
“You can’t be too strategic and lean only on those skills, and you can’t be too operational and lean only on those skills,” Howard told HR Brew. “There has to be a balance to get the outcomes you need for people and the business.”
Building a People-First Culture
Since stepping into the role in February, Howard has prioritized aligning DEI and people strategies with business goals. She’s started by meeting one-on-one with Textio’s 65 employees, ensuring HR remains connected to real workplace experiences.
“We talk a lot about engagement, but sometimes we get so focused on the strategic HR business piece that we forget real people need to know their leaders,” she said.
Real Conversations, Real Impact
Howard highlights that meaningful engagement happens beyond performance reviews. “I expect leaders to have real-time, touch-base conversations, not just when an employee is on a PIP, going on leave, or dealing with an issue, but as a regular part of the job.”
Her approach underscores a growing shift in HR: blending data-driven strategies with hands-on leadership to promote trust and inclusion.
