The Chicopee City Council has officially confirmed Karla Bourassa as the city’s Chief Human Resource Officer following a heated public debate and executive session. Bourassa, who previously served as Deputy Chief within the department, faced scrutiny after a complaint was lodged against the Human Resources Department.
Public Concerns and Calls for Transparency
The confirmation follows a special city council meeting on March 10, during which a former city councilor raised concerns about the department’s stability and leadership changes. The discussion was fueled by an investigation led by retired judge Mary Lou Rup, commissioned to assess the department’s performance.
During Monday’s public hearing, residents voiced support and distrust regarding Bourassa’s appointment. Some citizens questioned the transparency of the selection process. “All we’re asking for is transparency, but we’re not getting it,” said one Chicopee resident. “If she’s the best candidate, why is this being pushed through without proper documentation for public review?”
Support for Bourassa’s Leadership
Despite opposition, others in the community defended Bourassa’s qualifications and leadership. “Karla is strong, hardworking, and honest. She has the experience needed to run the department effectively,” said a supporter.
Following deliberations in a closed executive session, the council voted unanimously to confirm Bourassa, solidifying her role as the city’s Chief Human Resource Officer.
