Walmart, the largest private employer in the U.S., is scaling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives. The retailer announced it will not renew certain commitments, such as its racial equity center and demographic-specific workplace benchmarks while emphasizing its support for employee resource groups.
Key Changes in Walmart’s DE&I Strategy
The changes include discontinuing its five-year racial equity center established after George Floyd’s murder and halting participation in workplace surveys like the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. Walmart is also re-evaluating funding for Pride events but asserts that family-friendly spaces will remain separate from drag performances.
Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman highlighted the company’s focus on “belonging” over traditional DE&I terminology. “We aim to create a sense of belonging for associates, customers, and suppliers while evolving with societal changes,” she said.
Advocacy Groups Raise Concerns
Advocates, including the Human Rights Campaign, criticized the move, warning that such rollbacks could harm employee morale and workplace equality. Jarvis Sam, the founder of Rainbow Disruption, stressed, “Cutting DE&I programs signals a lack of investment in employees’ identities, which could lead to higher turnover.”
Despite these changes, Walmart reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion. Blakeman assured that the company’s gender-affirming healthcare benefits remain intact and that associate resource groups are “100% supported.”
Corporate Shift
Walmart joins other major corporations like Lowe’s and Toyota in rethinking DE&I strategies as conservative pressure mounts. However, equality advocates argue that diverse workplaces boost profitability and engagement.
The debate around DE&I is intensifying, leaving businesses caught between political and societal expectations.
