As 2025 draws near, businesses are encountering a stark reality: the qualifications of job seekers are failing to align with company needs. LinkedIn’s “Work Change Report,” released on January 15, reveals that while more job seekers are applying for positions, fewer are hearing back from employers. This mismatch poses a challenge for HR leaders and hiring managers across industries.
The Growing Disconnect
According to LinkedIn’s findings, nearly 40% of job seekers are submitting more applications than ever but are hearing back less frequently. At the same time, HR professionals report a significant gap between job applicant’s skills and their listed job criteria. 73% of hiring managers say that less than half of the applications they receive meet the necessary qualifications. LinkedIn’s Erin Scruggs attributes this to rapid shifts in job requirements and skill sets.
Scruggs highlights the role of HR leaders in closing this skills gap. “HR leaders are in a prime position to drive upskilling and reskilling efforts within their organizations,” she states. Many candidates who may not meet all qualifications can still excel if allowed to grow their skills within the role. Internal mobility, where companies develop talent from within, can also help bridge the divide and improve retention.
The Surge in Demand for AI and Sustainability Talent
LinkedIn’s report highlights the skyrocketing demand for AI and sustainability professionals, with AI-related hiring growing by more than 300% in the past eight years. As these sectors expand, businesses need workers with specialized skills, such as AI engineers and sustainability experts. If organizations fail to address the skills shortage in these areas, they risk falling behind competitors.
The Time for Action
The pressure on HR departments is undeniable. A recent report from TalentLMS found that nearly half of employees believe AI advancements are outpacing their company’s training capabilities. Without effective upskilling and reskilling strategies, businesses may struggle to retain top talent and remain competitive.
To successfully navigate this evolving era, HR professionals must lead by example, promoting continuous learning and skills development within their organizations. Upskilling is not just a response to the changing job market, it’s an investment in a company’s future success.
